"Designing with business in mind"
I was inspired by Vincent Feeney with his talk in Savvy UX Summit.
Hello friends, Happy Sunday! Welcome back to my newsletter!
I attended Savvy UX Summit this year. And it is my second year. They never disappoint me with the content delivered by the speakers.
Isn’t what we design for users?
One of my favourite talks is delivered by Vincent Feeney. He is currently a Product Design Manager at Zendesk. He had worked for different scales of companies including digital agencies, startups and enterprises. No matter how big or how small the size of your company, he suggested designers should also start “Designing with business in mind”.
“Designing with business in mind” does not mean we will ignore user needs. As Product Designers, we must design for the users. However, for a business to survive, they are fundamentally connected to these four metrics.
Revenue, Costs, Market Share, Shareholder Value
Hence, as a designer, we can start spending time connecting our work to the business outcome.
There are four key points mentioned in his talk.
Learn business basics
Learn how your business works
Speak in terms of the business
Learn to negotiate
Here are some of my learning points.
“Proxy Metric” is a lower-level metric, that is easier and faster to move than a high-level engagement metric.
Example: A video streaming platformSpeaking in the same language within the team is a “Magic Wand” to get things done.
We need to understand the expected outcome from two very different types of feedback.
Proactive Feedback
Reactive Feedback
“If everything is important, then nothing is.” We should know how to pick the battles. And communicate clearly when we make some deliberate trade-off decision.
It gives me a lot of insights into UX Design by just participating a UX Summit.
I will suggest you can follow “Savvy UX Summit” on Linkedin. And stay tuned for the next year's summit. It is worth the price.
